Lonstrup/Skagen, DK

We’ll be here in Denmark until tomorrow morning. Over the last few days, we have been living and working in separate locations. Louise has been assisting Peter Kuchinke with glassmaking in Lonstrup, where they have worked solidly from 12.00 to 17.00. Franca has been in Skagen from Wednesday to Sunday assisting Jonas Brus Steahr. We’ve both been helping with the production of stemware, jugs and vases. In Denmark, they make a lot of tableware. Working here is very different from being at Glass School. Nothing can go wrong and be thrown away, so our work assisting needs to be constant and consistent. This can be difficult as often we don’t really know what we have done wrong and the atmosphere in the Studio gets more and more tense.  For instance, on Wednesday Franca had a really good day and then on Thursday everything seemed to go wrong with the production (over the next few days things were a bit more balanced). Our hands are also black now and are beginning to look like worker’s hands. This is because in the studios here in Denmark the glass is made while sitting on a bench, without using huge amounts of water like at home. This is why all the dirt stays stuck to your hands.

Tomorrow morning we will make our way to Sweden for three weeks, although we are still not sure where to go. Peter is just giving Louise some advice about where it would be best for us to head to.
